Baseball tends to dominate the conversation over here. But this week, the Jomboy office is abuzz: Football is back.

With the season now officially underway, we grabbed Justin Penik to talk through what he's watching across the league, how one Hail Mary turned into the week's biggest video, and what Year 1 of the John Harbaugh era should look like for the Giants.

And the group chat pivots to hot dogs.

Penik: I was actually at a high school football game in Jersey City. Our social guy Kev messaged me — "you gotta do something on the Michigan game." I figured, well, it's a Hail Mary, what's the story beyond that? Then I saw the controversy. 

We pulled every replay, broke down the broadcast clock versus the scoreboard clock, and found a third clock we didn't even know existed. The scoreboard clock, which is supposed to be about as close to official as it gets, was off by fractions of a second — something nobody had really ever seen before. Turned it into a short around 12:30 a.m., and once that took off, we built it into a longer breakdown.

The Big Ten's official statement dropped after that — which looked like an ‘80s movie poster, somehow. Pretty good way to kick things off before our season had even technically started.

Penik: Selfishly, especially for content — I'm excited for moments. I'm excited for controversy. I'm excited for players getting into it. Night 1 of last season, it was Jalen Carter spitting at Dak Prescott before a snap was even taken. Stuff like that is how you stick out and tell a story.

And obviously it's just great to have ball back — two really good games to lead off the year, and tonight in Australia is going to be a really cool atmosphere to watch.

Penik: It's never really one specific thing — I'm always intentionally looking for stuff other people aren't. Last year our most viral video was a Steelers center who couldn't let go of the ball because he thought the offense was going no-huddle, and then Aaron Rodgers called everyone back to the huddle — if he'd let go, it would've been a penalty. Millions of people are watching almost every NFL game, but if I can tell a story you're watching and not seeing, that's what sticks.

Penik: They've got Harbaugh now — 180 career wins, third-most among active head coaches, 14th all-time. The Ravens made the playoffs 12 of his 18 seasons there; the Giants made it four times total over that same span. 

This team has always run on hope — hope this guy takes a step forward, hope this coach figures it out. Now the hope is actually backed by someone who's done it before. My ask this year: I want people still invested in this team after October. I want to see the Giants in the "in the hunt" graphic come November and December.

Penik: Skattebo's had a great summer — showed up day one of camp and was a full go. Nabers has had a gradual ramp-up and didn't play in the preseason, but he looks good to go for Week 1. Odell's 33 and actually had to earn his roster spot this time — I think he's looked like our third-best receiver. 

Basically every health and reunion storyline broke best-case-scenario this summer. The offense is going to look completely different, too — heavy formations, fullback Patrick Ricard back there, more of a bully-ball approach. Total opposite of the lighter, spread-out looks we saw under Daboll.

Penik: At least seven. Give me seven — give me eight! Anything above that and we're talking about a real in-the-hunt team in November and December — that's the whole goal this year.

(As if on cue, Shelfy walks through the door.)

Penik: They're hanging on by an offensive line that's old, banged up, and just lost its position coach in Jeff Stoutland. So backups are stepping in up front. And somehow they'll probably be fine again. They always are.
