Super smash

On Tuesday night in Anaheim, Reynaldo López threw a pitch up near Jorge Soler's head. Soler had already been hit by López earlier in the game after homering. As the catcher recovered the ball and threw down to second, Soler started walking toward the mound and shouting at Lopez, kicking off a baseball brawl that would somehow end with a takedown by 62-year-old Walt Weiss.

The one who knocks: Walt Weiss played shortstop for 14 years. He won a World Series with the A's in 1989, managed Colorado for four seasons, and now manages Atlanta. He is 62 years old but has been training in MMA for decades. A fully enraged, 235-pound Jorge Soler didn’t have a chance of slipping that tackle from Weiss.

Tackled with love: Jorge Soler won the 2021 World Series MVP with the Braves. He and López played together in Atlanta before Soler moved on to the Angels, and Weiss was his bench coach for multiple years. He wasn't just some opposing player getting tackled. He was, until recently, one of theirs. Postgame, Soler confirmed what Weiss's body language already suggested: they have a good relationship. Weiss understood why Soler was upset and way trying to prevent a bad situation from getting worse.

A breakdown, a breakdown: Of course, we immediately knew the baseball world would be expecting a breakdown of this moment by Jomboy. Here is how we turned it around in less than 24 hours. A few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, our breakdown prep editor Max arrived at the JM offices to begin recording all available angles from both broadcasts and organizing the footage for Jimmy. At 2:39 am, Max finally left the office with the files prepped. Jimmy arrived at 7 am yesterday and began a full day of analysis and editing (at one point tapping in our Spanish lip reader), and at 4:30 pm he began recording his voiceover. After one final edit by Max, we posted to YouTube at 7:30 pm. As all of this was happening, Trish from our ecomm team was working on a shirt commemorating the tackle, starting it on the bus ride to the office and wrapping it up in time for Jimmy and Max to integrate it directly into the breakdown.
