Bruh.
Jo Adell did something on Saturday night that had never happened before in baseball. He robbed three home runs in a single game. Shots off the bats of Cal Raleigh, Josh Naylor, and J.P. Crawford were each pulled out of the stands by Adell’s glove..
Legendary night: Torii Hunter, owner of nine consecutive Gold Gloves, summed it up as "the greatest defensive game I've ever seen." Raleigh's blast came in the first inning with 104.7 mph exit velocity. Adell was back near the wall. He leaped. He caught it. Then Naylor in the eighth. Then Crawford in the ninth. Adell went into the stands for that one.
The dividing line: In 2018 the Angels lowered their right-center field wall from 18 feet to 8 feet by putting a bright yellow line eight feet off the ground. The change was designed to increase home runs, but in this case it actually provided the opportunity for Adell’s heroics on the first two home runs, as he snatched the balls from just above the line. On the third home run he went over the shorter fence in the right field corner, but crucially he completed the catch before landing in the stands.
The turnaround: Here's the thing about Jo Adell: When he came up, he couldn't catch. During his rookie season in 2020 he pulled a Canseco; a flyball to him in right field bounced off his glove and over the fence for a four-base error. He’s gotten better every year, with 7 home run takeaways before this weekend’s triple theft. But the number that matters most is the one in the box score: Angels 1, Mariners 0. Adell preserved every run of that margin
