Hopefully better days ahead
Francisco Lindor's first home run of the season came on the third pitch of the game Tuesday night in LA — a leadoff line drive off Dodgers aceYoshinobu Yamamoto, everything you'd expect from the shortstop the Mets built their offense around. They still lost 2-1, fell to 7-11, and extended their losing streak to seven games. That's where this team is: the moment you've been waiting for finally arrives, and it still isn't enough.
The hamate’s tale: Lindor missed most of spring with a hamate injury. His career March/April OPS is already the second-lowest of any month in a normal year. Add a shortened spring, add the mental errors (getting picked off, defensive lapses, out-of-position plays), and this starts looking like a guy who never really got his feet under him before the season started.
The rest of the lineup: Soto is on the IL (right calf, not running at full speed, end-of-April return looking optimistic), Vientos was seemingly emerging from the tomb but has gone quiet again, and Bichette is not hitting. Lou Bob and Alvarez are carrying the offense.
Captaincy: The long-rumored plan was for Lindor to be named the first Mets captain since David Wright. It was so close to a sure thing that Yahoo Sports still reports it as fact. But it hasn’t happened, and as long as the Mets continue to underperform under Lindor’s tenure it’s hard to see him getting that patch.
